Ontario PCs Are Investing in French-Language Postsecondary Education in the North

The Ontario PC government is taking bold action to expand access to high-quality French-language postsecondary education in Northern Ontario.

In partnership with the University of Ottawa, we’re investing $10.8 million to relaunch French-language courses at the University of Sudbury—helping more Francophone students gain the skills they need to secure rewarding careers and meet the demands of Ontario’s growing workforce.

Starting in September 2025, the University of Sudbury will offer French-language programs in health sciences, management and commerce, social sciences, and the arts. This is part of our broader plan to build a highly skilled, bilingual workforce that will support stronger communities and a more competitive economy—especially in the North.

Since 2018, our government has made historic investments in French-language postsecondary education—including the creation of Ontario’s first two standalone Francophone universities: Université de l’Ontario français and Université de Hearst.

These strategic investments in small, Northern colleges and universities are essential to ensuring Ontario’s economy remains the most competitive in the G7.

Our PC team is delivering real results for Northern Ontario and Franco-Ontarians—because we know that supporting bilingual education means supporting jobs, opportunity, and growth.
